What about this then.

The Ian there is not me.
I doubt much if I'll go for W8 W7 is just almost 1 year old now, it will be 2 years when W8 will be released.
Thanks but no thanks. Probably a rouse to gather in more cash.

Still using Eset here as well. Low foot print and pretty good performance. Plays well with Win 7 too. Eset do an uninstaller...a small batch file that you have to run in safe mode which strips out all their files should you need to change programmes.

Hi Borg,
Not only do I use NOD, I'm using the ESS version with the firewall in it, and x64 too. I can safely say that I've never had a problem with ESET products, any problems I have had were of my own doing. I also use SUPERAntiSpyware, this gives me great protection. In all honesty I've never had any viruses or whatever, maybe its down to surfing carefully. |

On the same topic, I also found a great Uninstaller, Total Uninstall 5 at www.martau.com. It will uninstall all programs and the files that were installed with that program. One of the most "awkward" programs to uninstall is ESET Nod32, there are quite a few files that it leaves behind, but not with this uninstaller. A bit off-topic but do you still use Eset Nod 32. I have the latest version which works well for me. |

Hi Ian, Well what are your thoughts on Win 7 then? I have it running in Sun VM for now and am pleasantly surprised with how they have fixed most of the Vista crap. Very graphics intensive though if you keep all the eye candy turned on. Dead stable....for a Windows release, pre service pack 1! Might even be tempted to install it as a proper OS at some point. Hi RE, I do like W7, I got it the the Pro version the first day it was released at a super price plus the Home version at a very good price. I do like it, earlier this year I had problems that I blamed it for but turned out it was my mobo, in fact, 3 of them, I could not fix the problem with the PC so I contacted the dealer who though it was the mobo so I returned it, it was the mobo then the replacement worked for 1 week then went kaput, I got another and it bit the dust, I was a "happy bunny" at this stage - I wont post what my feelings were, however, the dealer was doing all he could and the next one has worked OK since then. You should consider permanently using it. I found a super defragger, Ultimate Defrag at http://www.disktrix.com. It is so good I bought it, there are a load of settings you can choose from, and if you want to move any files - even the page file - it will do that. If you look at it or whatever, read the instructions. There you go. Have a good day. |

Windows 7 freezes randomly for 30-45 sec - Finally Solved!
http://www.pcstats.com/NewsView.cfm?NewsID=85848 I know its Off topic but I dont see any where I can post it, all I have if this forum. If you get random freezes with W7 this may help. I got this same problem yesterday for the first time so I decided to follow the link above about 5 minutes ago. After the installation = there is a password in the email you receive= I found it stopped another I started to see. when I started my PC when the various icons appeared on screen there was nothing in them, after about 5 seconds the icons were back to normal with the little "images" in them. After I installed the fix the desktop were as they should be.. |

Over the past 24 hours or so some customer have experience web pages timing out and sites not resolving, remedy being refreshing the page in order to display the content.
The problem has been traced to an intermittent issue with one of our DNS servers which has now been resolved. You will however have to reboot your modem/router in order to pick up the fix which has now been applied, even if you have done so already. |

Borg, What's the score with these things and surge/spike protection devices? See, I've looked at getting some, to get ADSL to a spot awkward to network by traditional methods, but got conflicting info. on compatibility. Any input would be appreciated. Ta in advance. I don't use surge protectors (apart from the electronic cosumer unit trip fuses) and yes I also have read that they don't work with them. The signal is not supposed to pass through the domestic meter but it can be induced to a different ring main if the wiring is adjacent, so I guess it can transfer to a neighbour if the wires are bundled up. It can be encrypted though. Probably not ideal if you're sharing power lines with a neighbouring apartment but fine if you're some distance. The further the signal carries over your mains the weaker it gets. OK for me as the run is short and next door's power runs off a different overhead pole. Their advantage is that thick stone walls, which block my wifi, present no problem. Cheers for that, Borg. It sounds like we're in a similar situation regarding wireless and thick stone walls. There are only a couple of places in the property where wireless is OK but other than that it's a waste of time. I was concerned about the surge/spike protection device issue as pretty much everything up here is protected. We seem to positively attract lightning strikes and, as if that weren't enough, Norweb (or whatever the bloody hell they are called now) seem to delight in throwing us surges on a fairly frequent basis. Normal domestic appliances (TV, freezer etc) seem to cope with spikes and surges OK but PCs and radio transceivers don't like 'em at all. Looks like I'll have to bite the bullet and make my network connection the old fashioned way. |
