I tried one of these, claimed to be 9dB. I found so little difference to range that I went back to the original Netgear one -

Thanks for the advice. I'll see if Maplins do a return if not satisfied. I like the idea of the added flexibility of keeping the router out of the way and placing the antenna in a more favourable position.

Just to balance things here....I use a pair of Hawking Antenna to produce a webcam image over 1 km in clear line of sight.

Can't comment on the specifics, Borg.
However, from much experience with CB & Ham antennas, I know that most manufacturers spout utter bollocks when it comes to antenna gain.

Has anyone used a screw on external high gain antenna to increase the range and power of the wi-fi signal from their router. I am thinking of plugging this into my Netgear to replace its own antenna. Just wonder if it actually makes a difference. It's 5dbi gain.
